Randomly inserted loose inserts are often a bit of a scattergun approach to magazine advertising. Often, the A5 leaflets look a lot like each other with special offers abounding. In order to stand out above this type of offering maybe you should consider a loose insert with a secondary purpose rather than just a throw-away leaflet. How about a door hanger for instance?  Let’s say that you are advertising a weekend stay at a hotel with a 10% reduction with this coupon. Wouldn’t it be so much better to make it a door hanger - “Do not disturb – I’m having a great time at The Grand Hotel.”

A loose insert could end up on your customer’s desk

How about a table talker as a year-end promotion featuring a desk-top calendar on one side and your sales message on the other? Once the sales message has been read, the table talker would be quickly assembled as a desk top calendar.

Let’s say that your ad included a free bottle of wine with every order placed. How about a Bottle Bow as your loose insert – or if that causes problems for the magazine’s insertion process, maybe a bottle collar would be a good idea.

Talk to the Magazine before ordering loose inserts

As with all of the products in this section, you will need to talk to the magazine about using a shaped product as a loose insert. If the mag does hand-inserts then there is no problem. However, this might cost a little more than machine insertion. Some mags may well insist on standard formats for loose inserts. You might find that they want to see samples before agreeing to take your great new idea – but please persevere as the extra effort should make significant improvements to the result!
